Application Modernization Discovery

Some of your most important applications are also your riskiest — running on aging infrastructure, poorly documented, and one key person's knowledge away from becoming unmaintainable.

A clear, portfolio-level modernization plan — which applications to rehost, replatform, refactor, or retire, and in what order.

Who it’s for

  • IT leaders managing a portfolio of legacy applications with unclear modernization priorities
  • Organizations planning a data center exit or cloud migration without an application-level plan yet
  • Teams that need a defensible business case before committing budget to modernization

What we deliver

  • Application portfolio assessment — business criticality, technical complexity, and total cost of ownership
  • A modernization strategy recommendation per application, using the four Rs (rehost, replatform, refactor, rearchitect)
  • Identification of applications better suited for retirement than modernization
  • A sequenced roadmap balancing risk, cost, and business value
  • A business case ready for budget and leadership approval

How the engagement works

Typical duration: 4–8 weeks depending on portfolio size

01

Inventory

Catalog the application portfolio in scope, including ownership, dependencies, and technical debt.

02

Assess

Score each application on business criticality, technical complexity, and cost.

03

Strategize

Recommend a modernization path per application, not a one-size-fits-all approach.

04

Sequence

Build a phased roadmap and business case ready for stakeholder approval.

FAQ

Does this include the actual migration work?

This engagement is the discovery and planning phase; migration and re-engineering are scoped as a follow-on project once priorities are set.

Can you assess a portfolio that spans multiple business units?

Yes, scope and duration adjust based on portfolio size and complexity.

What if some applications should just be retired?

We'll say so — retirement candidates are called out explicitly rather than defaulted into a migration path.

Do you require access to source code?

Read-level access to architecture documentation and selected code is typically sufficient; we scope exact needs with your team upfront.
